Edwin Castro of Altadena won a $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot on Nov. 7, 2022, with a ticket purchased at Joe’s Service Center in his hometown. The record-setting California Lottery win also brought the retailer a $1 million commission bonus, according to Yahoo.
Altadena ticket led to a record jackpot
Castro’s prize was the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. He claimed the cash option on Feb. 14, 2023, choosing a lump-sum payment rather than taking the jackpot as an annuity.
The advertised jackpot and the cash payout are different amounts; the $2.04 billion figure represents the jackpot he won, not his cash payment.
California property purchases followed the win
After claiming his prize, Castro purchased a beachfront home in Malibu for $3.8 million and two other California homes, Yahoo reported.
One of his luxury homes was destroyed in the California wildfires in January 2025. His subsequent real estate purchases included land in Altadena, where the winning ticket had been sold.
In October 2025, Castro told The Wall Street Journal that he had paid $10 million for 15 lots in his hometown after the fires, according to Yahoo.
