The first NFL championship game in the newest NFL venue will be a first in another way.
That history is all about the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show for Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
The show will be the first time that five award-winning musical artists will simultaneously appear on a single stage. It’s a fitting tribute to the metropolitan area that includes Inglewood.
Details of the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show
On Feb. 13, two NFL teams will meet to decide a league title. However, for many fans, the bigger deal could be what’s happening while the teams are off the field.
Once again, Pepsi is the title sponsor of the halftime show. Together with RocNation, they have enlisted a quintet to play the show, including:
- Dr. Dre
- Eminem
- Kendrick Lamar
- Mary J. Blige
- Snoop Dogg
It’s the first time that these five artists will appear in a show together. According to a press release, the collective credentials of these musicians include 22 Billboard No. 1 albums and 43 Grammy awards.
Three of the five performers are from the greater Los Angeles area. Both Dr. Dre and Lamar hail from Compton while Snoop Dogg is a Long Beach product.
The production has another meaning for Dr. Dre and the LA metro. It will provide funds for a project that Dr. Dre has been involved in for years.
Donation to Dr. Dre educational initiative
The press release says that the NFL and Pepsi will support the launch of Regional School #1, an expansion of the USC Iovine and Young Academy. Dr. Dre founded that school with Jimmy lovine.
The school is set to open next fall in South Los Angeles. It focuses on incorporating design, entrepreneurship and technology into its curriculum. In addition to funding, the NFL and Pepsi plan to provide experience and internships for students.
As Dr. Dre said in the release:
“The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show and to do it in my own backyard will be one of the biggest thrills of my career. I’m grateful to JAY-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment.”
The next few months of the NFL season will determine which teams will perform to bookend this show. This year, it won’t be a shock if many fans merely turn the game on for the halftime show, though.
