2022 Farmers Insurance Open: sports betting odds and players to watch in CA

The PGA Tour heads South to San Diego following last week’s The American Express in La Quinta won by 225/1 longshot, Hudson Swafford.

The Farmers Insurance Open starts Wednesday, Jan. 26 and plays through Saturday, Jan. 29 to avoid running alongside the NFL Conference Championship games.

Californians will no doubt be tuned into the NFC Championship game Sunday when the Los Angeles Rams host the San Francisco 49ers with the winner advancing to the Super Bowl on Feb. 13 at the same site, SoFi Stadium.

Torrey Pines Golf Course

For the second straight week, the PGA event is held on multiple courses.

  • Torrey Pines (South): 7,765 yards, Par 72
  • Torrey Pines (North): 7,258 yards, Par 72

Golfers will play one round apiece on the South and North courses Wednesday and Thursday. Following the 36 hole cut, the top 65 players plus ties will play the South Course on Friday and Saturday.

Length off the tee is an advantage this week, as the South Course is among the very longest on Tour. So power is a major weapon, and experience at Torrey Pines is also key.

The South Course also yields one of the highest missed fairway percentages on Tour with its narrow fairways. Putting on Poa Annua greens is of significant importance at Torrey Pines South with the smaller than average and tricky greens annually among the most difficult on Tour to hit putts inside 15 feet.

Odds, favorites and players to watch

The first big golf draw of 2022 is the Farmer’s Insurance Open. A total of 6 of the top-10 players in the world rankings and 25 of the top 50 will compete at Torrey Pines in La Jolla.

That includes world No. 1 Jon Rahm, who is the betting favorite to win. Rahm won this event in 2017 and finished runner-up in 2020 and T7 in 2021. Rahm also won the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines South, and the Golden State’s Tiger Woods won the most memorable 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in a playoff.
