BetMGM Sportsbook California App – 2022 Update & Preview

As more states offer legal sports betting, Californians may be wondering when their time will arrive. The timeline for legal sports betting in the state remains unclear, however, as lawmakers and interested parties still have some questions to answer and issues to iron out.

This page will explain what needs to take place for California to legalize sports betting and, if that happens, what it might look like in the state. This includes sportsbooks that could eventually open in California, one of which is BetMGM.

How will BetMGM Sportsbook fare in California?

When it comes to sports betting in California, BetMGM truly did waste no time ensuring the brand has a market access plan for the state.

Back in 2018, MGM Resorts announced a joint partnership with the United Auburn Indian Community (UAIC) via its MGM Interactive brand. UAIC operates Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Northern California.

The two groups were very forward-thinking, as it came literally weeks after the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). In the time since then, many things have changed, but we are not really much closer to a resolution of what sports betting in California will look like.

The tribes do seem to be the only group in California making headway towards bringing sports betting to the state. However, if other groups like California cardrooms, racetracks, or the teams themselves, BetMGM does have other opportunities to get in the state.

BetMGM is working on getting into the horse racing app space, recently partnering with the New York Racing Association. As BetMGM’s racing app expands, it could develop relationships with racetracks, including one of the many tracks in California.

Finally, should the final version of California sports betting grant licenses to athletic facilities or athletic franchises, BetMGM has connections with specific sports leagues. The NHL, NBA, and MLB all consider BetMGM an official sportsbook partner. That could elevate into an actual sportsbook partner though in places like Maryland and Arizona, where the leagues themselves have access to sports betting licenses. If you see those kinds of partnerships happening in these, markets, that could be a sign of how MGM Resorts approaches market access to California.

BetMGM Sportsbook app in California

BetMGM already operates online sportsbooks in several states, and would almost certainly seek to add California to that list should the state allow it. In states where it is legal, BetMGM’s online sportsbook is accessible via its website and app for Android and iOS. Once there, users can create a BetMGM account, make a deposit, and start placing bets within a matter of minutes. The interface is clear and easy to use.

BetMGM online sportsbook pros and cons

Easily one of the best parts about BetMGM Sportsbook is that you are instantly enrolled in the M life Rewards program, which is the same loyalty program as at MGM Resort properties. Bets that you place will then earn you points that you can redeem at MGM properties around the world.

The sportsbook itself offers a variety of features, as well. One of our favorites is the Easy Parlay Builder. Just select the Easy Parlay header, and you’ll arrive at a page with spread, total, and moneyline bets for the biggest sports going on at that time. From there it’s just a matter of a few clicks to create a parlay.

On the downside, though, the BetMGM app can be noticeably slower than the apps from other top sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars. Overall, BetMGM’s app is not terribly lethargic or out of date, but it can be a bit slow. Despite that, it still is a great online sportsbook and one that we definitely recommend.

Bets available at BetMGM sports betting

When wagering on sports at BetMGM, the first three bets you’ll likely see are moneylines, point spreads, and totals. Here’s a rundown of what those wagers entail, along with an explanation of parlays if you’re interested in combining your wagers.

  • The moneyline tells you which team is favored and how much money bets on each team will win if you wager correctly. The bigger the number next to each team means the more of either an underdog or favorite that team is; underdogs have positive odds, and favorites are negative.
  • Point spreads are essentially handicaps that sportsbooks give teams, indicating either that the team must win by more than the spread (for favorites) or must avoid losing by more than the spread (for underdogs). Point spreads usually have odds around -110, meaning if you bet $11 you would win back $10.
  • Totals are bets that have nothing to do with which team wins or loses. Instead, they are wagers on the total combined score of a game. You can wager on whether the total score will be over or under the sportsbook’s line. Odds are usually around -110 on both sides here, too.
  • Parlays are when you group individual wagers together to increase your potential winnings. The downside is that just one wrong pick will sink the whole parlay.

In addition to this brief rundown, BetMGM has a Basics of Sports Betting page on its website for more detail.

Sports and teams you can bet on

BetMGM sports betting has wagering markets for the top leagues, meaning users can bet on the NBA, NFL and NHL, MLB, college football and college basketball odds, the WNBA, MLS, the PGA Tour, NASCAR, ATP and WTA tennis, and UFC. One of the more popular options at BetMGM is international soccer leagues like Mexico’s Liga MX, Germany’s Bundesliga, Spain’s La Liga, and the English Premier League.

When it comes to California sports teams, there are all the Los Angeles teams: Dodgers odds and Angels odds (MLB), Chargers odds and Rams odds (NFL), Lakers odds and Clippers odds (NBA), Kings odds (NHL), Sparks odds (WNBA), Galaxy odds and Los Angeles FC odds (MLS).

Other options from around the state are A’s odds, Padres odds, and Giants odds for MLB betting (plus MLB player props and Home Run Derby odds),  San Francisco 49ers odds, the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks, and MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes.

BetMGM sports promotions

BetMGM online betting welcomes news users with a risk-free first bet that is good for up to $1,000: If the first real money bet you place loses, you’ll get a free bet in the same amount. The promotions don’t stop there, either. Here is a look at a few of the other offers you can expect to see:

  • Money Mondays: Place $50 in qualifying bets during the week, and the following Monday BetMGM gives you a free $10 bet.
  • Parlay Plus: All your parlays of four to seven legs are boosted as long as you opt into the Parlay Plus promotion. Four-leg parlays increase by 15%, then 20%, 30%, and finally 40% as you add legs up to seven.
  • Insurance promos: BetMGM also gives you up to $25 back if your same-game parlays fail by only one leg for certain sports. Once again just make sure you opt in to be eligible.

BetMGM offers new promos frequently, so check the site to avoid missing anything.
