Prediction market operator Kalshi is seeing strong interest in World Cup broadcast mention markets, with five contracts tied to upcoming tournament matches generating more than $458,000 in combined trading volume.
Unlike traditional sports wagers, mention markets allow prediction market traders to speculate on whether broadcasters will say specific words or phrases during a match broadcast.
The niche products have emerged as some of the most active World Cup-related markets on Kalshi’s exchange.

France-Senegal leads the pack
The most active mention market is tied to France vs. Senegal, which has generated $250,732 in trading volume.
Among the most-discussed contracts in the market are “handball” and “penalty shootout,” both carrying probabilities near 50%. That market alone accounts for more than half of the combined volume among the top five World Cup mention offerings.
Argentina-Algeria surpasses $115K
The second-largest market centers on Argentina’s matchup against Algeria, with $115,116 in volume.
Traders have shown particular interest in whether broadcasters will mention “crossbar” or “handball” during the match. Both contracts were trading close to even odds Tuesday, indicating uncertainty over whether either phrase will be used.
Iraq-Norway draws significant interest
Third on the leaderboard is Iraq vs. Norway, which has attracted $60,000 in volume.
The most active contracts include mentions of “Golden Boot” and “Ronaldo,” both of which were trading above the 50% mark. The activity suggests traders expect commentators to reference broader World Cup storylines during the broadcast.
Austria-Jordan and Portugal-Congo DR round out top five
Austria vs. Jordan ranks fourth with $19,000 in trading volume.
Contracts tied to the words “record” and “Qatar” have attracted the most attention in that market.
Portugal vs. Congo DR completes the top five with $14,165 in volume. Traders have focused primarily on whether broadcasters will say “handball” or “nutmeg” during the match.
Alternative to traditional sports wagering
For California residents, the growth of World Cup mention markets highlights the expanding role of prediction markets in sports-related trading.
While California online sports betting is not yet legalized, Kalshi operates as a federally regulated event-contract exchange. As a result, Californians can participate in these markets despite the state’s continued prohibition on traditional online sports wagering.
The popularity of mention markets also illustrates how prediction markets differ from conventional sports wagering. Rather than focusing on final scores or match winners, traders are attempting to forecast the language broadcasters will use during live World Cup coverage.
