Sky River Casino recently revealed details of the expansion project it announced over six months ago.
Sky River is planning a two-phase expansion that will add a large parking garage, a new hotel, a luxurious pool and event space.
Work is expected to begin this year, with final completion set for early 2027.
Phase 1 of construction includes 1,600-slot parking garage
The state boasts nearly 70 California tribal casinos. The Wilton Rancheria Tribe operates Sky River in Elk Grove, which is a suburb of Sacramento.
The first phase of construction includes a parking garage with multiple stories. It will have 1,600 parking spaces and will offer improved valet services. That project is expected to begin later this year with a planned deadline of summer 2025.
The second phase includes the construction of a new 300-room hotel. It will also include an outdoor pool, a full spa, and an event space that can be used for entertainment. In addition to the new construction, Sky River plans to add another 400 slot machines and elevated gaming areas for VIP guests and high-limit players.
The second phase has a tentative deadline of early 2027, but that could change based on the availability of materials and weather.
Sky River Casino, which already employs 1,600 people, projects the expansion will create another 200 new jobs in Elk Grove.
Sky River president says Sky River will become a destination
Wilton Rancheria Chairman Jesus Tarango told ABC 10 that the expansion will make for a brighter future for both the tribe and residents of Elk Grove.
“We are very proud of what we have created – and continue to imagine – at Sky River Casino. With these expansion plans now firmly in process, the future is even brighter for the Elk Grove community, greater Sacramento area, and for generations of Wilton Rancheria people, the only federally recognized tribe in Sacramento County.”
Sky River Casino President Michael J. Facenda told Indian Gaming the project will make Sky River a destination casino.
“These expansion plans for Sky River will continue to set new standards of excellence for casino experiences not only in the Sacramento area, but throughout Northern California and beyond. Once we have a world-class hotel, event space and other highly desirable amenities, we will offer a destination of appeal to guests who will travel in search of elevated experiences that are highlighted by lively gaming and entertainment, amazing culinary options, upscale overnight accommodations, and relaxing environments.”
Tribe gave no plans when it bought land last October
The first hint that a Sky River Casino expansion project was on the way was when the tribe purchased a piece of land just north of its casino last October.
No plans were announced by the tribe at that time.
When the land was originally purchased, Tarango called it “historic.” He said that it would benefit generations to come for both the tribe and Elk Grove.
“Today, as we embark on this historic land purchase, we honor not only our past but also the future. In acquiring this land, we sow the seeds of prosperity for seven generations to come. Our vision is rooted in a legacy of stewardship, ensuring that our descendants inherit a world richer in culture, tradition, and opportunity. This purchase is not just a transaction; it is a pledge to safeguard the heritage of our people and to preserve our ancestors’ lasting legacy as the original caretakers of this land.”
Wilton Rancheria’s Executive Director of Economic Development, Chris Franklin, called the land purchase a “transformative milestone.” Addin that “this land acquisition signifies a transformative milestone for Wilton Rancheria, presenting an opportunity that holds the promise of prosperity not only for the tribe but also for the city of Elk Grove and the greater Sacramento area.”
